Sat 3 – Assult on Learning

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 7:20 am and

1. What stood out to me from this article was how Teshada Herring was brave enough to attend school knowing there were a group of girls at school that wanted to fight her.

2. I think this issue is important for our school district to address because, nobody should have to experience the feeling of being scared to go to school. The school district should want to create a learning environment where kids can come to school and know that they’re safe and they should know they’re going to make it home saftely without any worries.

3. To reduce violence in our city schools I would:

  • Kick out the students who are causing the trouble amongst others: The reason why I say this is because in some school theye give you too many chances. They threaten you about kicking you out but it never happens. The school district should be more strict and stop allowing it to get to this point. They should try and stop it before it happens.
  • Check the childs background at home: The reason why I say this is because some students act disorderly because of the living environment they experience at home. They could be going through something at home with their family so they might take it out on the people around them.
  • Have a one on one conversation with the child: The reason why I say this is because some students might have issues because they never really had someone they can talk to about their problems. If you sit down and talk to them you might can relieve some of the built up stress they have inside and they can turn into a whole nother person.
  • Send them to a school that teaches them a lesson on why they wouldn’t want to be treated the way they treat others: The reason why I say this is because some students don’t realize how bad they can make a person feel until it actually happens to them. It gives them a taste of their own medicine.

4. I don’t have any personal experiences to violence in school, but I know how being bullied can feel because my bestfriend was bullied growing up and she let it get to the point where she just didn’t want to go to school and she would make up lies to her parents stating why she didn’t want to go. Eventually her parents found out because they school called home adn asked what was going on.

The Skin I’m In Summary – Sharon Flake

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 6:19 pm and

This story by Sharon Flake is a very despairing story. It shows all of the pain and suffering a young girl named Maleeka had to face growing up. Maleeka was bullied because of her skin color. She was a little darker then everybody else so she was teased terribly because of it. Ever since her father died they became poor. He was the provider. Her mother couldn’t afford to buy her clothes, so she decided to make them for her. She was teased because of that too. She was teased so bad to the point where she just started to become ashamed of herself. She had a very low self-esteem. Maleeka went from being a straight A student to a failing student. One day Maleeka decided to turn to a girl named Charlese, who was someone who always had to be in control and wanted to run everybody and everything. They made a deal that Maleeka would do her homework, chores, and all of her dirty work for her in return for clothes. Maleeka thought that if she would wear better clothes that would be one less thing the kids could tease her about. When Maleeka gets a new teacher named Miss Saunders. She had a rare skin disease. Maleeka realized that Miss Saunder wasn’t ashamed of the skin she was in, so why should she be ashamed of the skin she was in. I think the moral of the story is it doesn’t matter what people think of you, your beautiful in your own way. You have family and your real friends that love you just the way you are and that’s all that matters.

Valentines Day Story

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 3:50 pm and

Today is February 14th. I’m sure this date looks familiar to you. Well my name is Sarah and I am 13 years old, I’m in the 8th grade. Today my school is having a Valentines Day dance for the 6-8th graders. When I was younger I never really knew the meaning of Valentines Day. I always thought It was a day when people recieve chocolate covered candies, roses, and pretty cards that sing a joyful tune when you open them. Now as I got a little older I’m really just starting to realize how important Valentines day is to some people. Back when I was in 5th grade me and my friends would always see the 7th and 8th graders hugging and kissing in the hallway, and we would always go up to them and say ill. We didn’t know any better. We were young. But now I’m old enough to really understand what Valentines Day is all about. Okay so there’s this boy that I like. His name is Chris. He’s in my class, He’s really nice, He has a beautiful personality, and he has a sense of humor. There’s only one problem. Almost all the girls in my school like him. I guess you can say he’s popular. Me and every other girl in the school has been waiting for him to ask one of us to the Valentines Day dance but It’s the day before and he still hasn’t asked anyone yet. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t want to cause a problem between friends, Or maybe it’s because he doesn’t like any of us. There could be a million reasons. Everytime he comes around my friends start screaming and carrying on like he’s a celebrity or something. I’m the only girl who doesn’t cause a scene when I see a cute guy enter a room that I may like. Tomorrow’s Monday and I really don’t feel like going back to school. Nobody wants to go to school after they just had off for a couple days.

Today is the Valentines Day dance and my mom is driving me to school. It feels ackward between us for a moment because there is nothing but dead silence. I don’t kno what that is all about.  She finally says something to me. She asked me why I didn’t have much to say this morning. I told her because I was still sleepy, and I didn’t feel like talking, But really it was because I was thinking about Chris the whole time and why he hasn’t asked anyone to the dance yet. When I get 2 minutes away from school my mom asked me If I had everything I needed. I said yes while I was gathering my
things for school and unbuckling my seatbelt. She leaned over and kissed me on my forehead and told me she loved me before I got out the car. Before I can say I love her back my friend Tia said “Sarah” and she came over to give me a hug. We walked away talking and lauging until we got into the class room. Me and sarah sat down at our desks and our teacher Mrs. Brown greated us with a goodmorning. After we said hello me and Tia continued to finish our conversation. She asked me was I ready for the Valentines dance. I said I don’t know and kinda looked at the floor. She said what do you mean you don’t know. I said I don’t have anybody to go with, and Valentines day is not fun when your spending it alone, without your crush. She said we don’t need any boys Sarah we got eachother. I said guess your right I said. No sooner then she said that, Chris walked in the room and Tia ran over to him and pulled out his chair for him, greated him with a “Hi Chris” while gazing into his eyes, My faced dropped. Wasn’t she the one who just told me you don’t need boys. I sat there and shook my head, and listened to my ipod until it was time for my class to go down to the dance. 5 minutes later my principal made an announcement on the loud speaker saying “All 6th through 8th graders please report down to the gym for the Valentines Day dance” Mrs. Brown made us line up so we can be on our way down there. When we got down there I saw the rest of my friends from my other classes. We ran up to each other and hugged one another. An hour later they started playing music and me and my friends were having fun, drinking kool-aid, eating chips and other snacks while dancing on the dance floor. Chris and his friends were in the corner sitting on the mats in the gym drinking their juice, and eating their chips, and laughing. I was wondering what they were laughing about, But I wasn’t going to go over there and aske them. Tia asked me to do my favorite dance I use to do all the time when we were little but I told her no because Chris was watching me. I knew all the attention was going to be on me that’s why I didn’t want to do it. I was acting shy. I didn’t want all eyes to be on me. There was over a hundred kids there. She kept asking me, So I finally broke down and did it. As soon as I bent down to drop into my split I heard a loud rip noise. Nothing but fear was shown in my eyes. When I turned around I saw Chris and his friends laughing and pointing at me, and my friends mouths dropped to the floor with their hands covering their mouths. I was thinking in my head, Please tell me this didn’t happen to me, Tell me I’m dreaming. I got off the gym floor and turned around slowly. My pants ripped and my underwear was showing. This is by far the worst day of my life. I ran out the gym crying, and all I can hear is Chris and his friends laughing even louder. Maybe he isn’t as nice as I thought. I was so embarassed.

Tyrell

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 1:41 pm and

I really liked the book that i read in October. My book was called Tyrell. I liked this book because it was a true story and people really do go through the things he went through in this book in real life. My favorite part of the story was when Tyrell and his family got their life together and started to get better oppose to getting worse. My least favorite part of the story was when Tyrell’s mom was depending on him to do everything and he’s only a teenager. She was telling him to do things that she should have been doing. I also didn’t like the part when Tyrell’s mom came home drunk and started yelling at her children for no reason. I feel as though if you don’t want kids or your not going to be able to take care of them, then don’t bring them into this world and make them suffer. You got yourself into it so get yourself out if it. All of the above is why I liked the story and why i didn’t like the story.

How To Make American Teens Smarter

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 1:26 pm and

I really like the article. It tought me alot of things that  i didn’t know before. I didn’t like the article because some teens might find this article as a insult because it’s an article on how to make teens smarter. So people might think that they article is saying teens are dumb.

Is Soda The New Tabacco?

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 4:43 pm and

I liked the article alot because it was very detailed and it made me not want to drink soda as much as i do. I disliked it the article because I feel as though they shouldn’t have compared drinking soda to tabacco even though they think it’s just as bad. I understand that soda can be just as addictive as tabacco but i think they chose the wrong comparison. The reason why i say is because if you come across a person who really loves soda and drinks it everyday the article might have them walking around thinking they’re smoking just because they drink soda.

All of the above is my opinion about the article and why i like it, dislike it and my reasons for both.
